When pressure is applied to a horse with a sensitive tongue, its response will be one or more of the following:

  • Shaking its head
  • Sticking its tongue out
  • Sucking its tongue back and as a result making an intermittent coughing noise
  • Trying to put its tongue over the bit
A neutral bit is suitable for a horse that holds its head in the correct position when pressure is applied and shows no signs of having a sensitive tongue or objecting to the pressure.
If a horse objects to pinching of the tongue and bar pressure it will poke its nose up and out. These bits will reduce the pressure on the tongue and bars and as a result the horse will bring its head down and in.

When pressure is applied to a horse that objects to continuous pressure, it will exibit one or more of the following traits:

  • It pulls its head down
  • It tries to pull the reins out of the riders hands
  • It tucks its head against its chest and gets "behind" the bit
